The United States monetary authority reduced interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.
Move Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve
The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Changes
In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the count of new jobs added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.
The figure of jobs added to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.
Private Data Indicate Continued Decline
Though BLS was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in September, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, which he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.
Price Data Reveals Gradual Increase
Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for September that showed that costs are going up, albeit gradually. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
